GOGGIN CLINCHES NSW SENIOR OPEN IN THRILLING FINISH

Mat Goggin is back where he belongs – in the winner’s circle. The veteran Aussie carded a final-round 68 to take out the 2025 NSW Senior Open at Thurgoona Country Club Resort, finishing on 13 under par and claiming victory by just one shot.

It was a tense showdown to the last hole. Ozzie legend Peter Lonard and South African Leon Trenerry pushed hard, but Goggin’s experience shone through. After a bogey on 16 Goggin was two back from the leader, Trennery. A booming 300+m drive on the 17th hole set up a crucial birdie, swinging momentum in his favour. Trennery bogeyed the same hole which meant a two shot swing and it was all even at 12 under coming down the last.

Lonard played in the second last group and signed for a total of 12 Under. All he could do was sit and watch the final group come down 18 to see if his score would hang on.

Goggin hit his drive left and was faced with an approach from the first cut of rough over a tree to a tight back left pin. He hit a miraculous wedge from the rough to about 10-12 feet. Trennery had his own birdie putt from 25 feet but couldn’t hole it. That left Goggin with his putt for the win. He dutifully holed the putt and claimed his first win in a decade.

In his victory interview with Mark Hayes Goggin said of his up and down round, “It wasn’t pleasant but obviously he let me in on 17 with that bogey and gave me a chance after the wheels fell off in the middle of the round for me so to close it out with a couple of good birdies especially that shot out of the rough there, picking the right club for once was just a bonus, a real bonus.”

About winning Goggin said” Its hard to win anywhere - I don’t care what the of competition is or where it is in the world it’s hard to finish tournaments off….so its just satisfying to get a win after having not won anything for a long time.”

Goggin’s final scores over three rounds – 71‑64‑68 – were enough to edge out the field, with Lonard and Trenerry tied second on 12 under. Last years winner David McKenzie finished 4th on -11.

The win marks Goggin’s first tournament triumph since 2015, proving that the Tasmanian still has the touch and nerves to close out a tournament.
