Ozzie Open Day One

The winds blew and Royal Melbourne bared some of its teeth on day one of the Crown Australian Open. The crowds came out to see the big stars, Rory McIlroy, Min Woo Lee, Adam Scott as well as Cam Smith and Elvis Smylie. It’s been a long time since the crowds were five deep on Thursday at a golf tournament in Australia.

And at the end of the day it was the rising Western Australian star, Smylie, that was at the top of the leaderboard at 6 under. He shares that honour with Kiwi Ryan Fox and Mexican Carlos Ortiz.

Crowd favourite and golf royalty Rory McIlroy had a frustrating day and finished the day at one over the card. The Irish superstar just couldn’t get his putter working and needs a better day to make the cut and fulfil the sponsors dreams of him playing on the weekend.

A trio of Ozzie potential winners sit four of the pace at two under. Adam Scott, Min Woo Lee and Cam Davis are all in a comfortable position heading into day two.

The weather prediction offers hopes of an easier day at Royal Melbourne on Friday so scoring should be the same if not a bit better than day one.If this plays out then the cut line might be around even par.
