Rory McIlroy goes back to back at Augusta National to win his second Masters and his sixth major. He joins Jack Nicklaus, Sir Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods as the only players to have successfully defended at the Masters.

McIlroy’s six shot lead from Friday was gone by Saturday afternoon but on the final day it was a combination of him holding on and no one else close enough being able to mount a challenge. Scottie Scheffler played the weekend bogey free and finished a single shot behind McIlroy but he had started too far back on Saturday. Scheffler is monotonously good and his eleven under weekend was not good enough to overcome his +2 Friday which is where his tournament was lost.

Tyrell Hatton shot the equal best score of the final round (-6) with Keegan Bradley but Hatton had also started too far back and finished T3 a further shot behind Scheffler. The others at T3 were Justin Rose, Russ Henley and Cam Young.

After 10 Holes Rose looked like he might be the one to don the green jacket. He played the front nine four under and looked completely in charge of his game. He stood on the 10th tee leading The Masters by two shots. Alas, bogeys at 11 and 12 and a three put par on 13 ended his charge and he now has five top 5 finishes at this tournament. Cameron Young started the day as joint leader with McIlroy and played excellent tee to green golf but could not make a putt. His putting for the last round was his worst for the week.

Jason Day started Sunday only three shots from the lead but had a day to forget carding a three over 75 to finish T12. That, at least, gets him an invite to next years Masters but it was not the Sunday the Ozzie was hoping for.

Ultimately McIlroy was too good for the rest and he gets to wear the green jacket for another 12 months. This is great news for Ozzie fans who will see him down under again later this year for the Australian Open at Kingston Heath.
