Weekly Wrap - Week 36

A Kiwi makes it three in a row, and a threepeat for a South African in Switzerland. Joyous scenes in Ireland for the home team as GB&I take the Walker Cup on the final hole of the tournament for their first win in 11 years.

Weekly Wrap - Week 36

Walker Cup

Team Golf at its best was seen at Lahinch this week. Team GB&I overcame a three point deficit going into the final afternoon to clinch a nail-biting 13 ½ - 12 ½ point victory over USA. With two matches left on the course the USA only need a point to retain the Cup whilst GB&I needed 1 ½ points to reclaim the trophy.

In the penultimate group Connor Graham was playing young phenom Miles Russell. Graham came back from three down at the 11th including a birdie on the last to claim an important half point and then it was up to Josh Hill who cam to his 18th and the final hole of the competition needing to win the hole to secure the cup for GB&I.

Hill’s approach found a greenside bunker and he then hit a glorious shot to about three feet. Meanwhile his opponent was struggling to make par. Hill drained the birdie putt and the celebrations began.

It was the first win for GB&I in 11 years.

Purse: USD $3.75M

Ozzies in the field: Jason Scrivener, David Micheluzzie, Ryan Peake, Anthony Quayle, Connor McKinney, Jack Buchanan, Dan Hillier (NZ)

The scenery was great but the golf was better. Now hometown player Paul Casey came so close to securing his playing status in the winner’s category. Casey resigned from the Tour when he went to LIV so has no fines or pending suspensions to deal with. He just needs a pathway back and winning is a sure-fire way to do that.

Ultimately though it was a South African, yet again, who took the spoils. Thriston Lawrence carded a final round -8 to post a score of eighteen under. Casey had the lead by one teeing off the 72nd hole but an errant approach saw the Englishman take a bogey and drop back to join Lawrence. There ensured a sudden death playoff which took four holes to determine with the big South African holing a twenty five footer for birdie to clinch his third red jacket.

No ‘best of’ for the Ozzies as one missed cut is as bad as the next. None of our guys played on the weekend.

Hotel Planner Tour

Tournament: Rosa Challenge Tour 2026

Dates: 3-6 September

Course: Rosa Golf Club, Konopiska, Poland

Purse: €300,000

Ozzies in the field: Daniel Gale, Danny List (NZ)

John Gough captured his second HotelPlanner Tour victory with a one shot win over compatriot Andrew Wilson. The win takes the Englishman to fifth on the OOM and in good position to secure promotion to the DP World Tour and the end of the season.

Neither of the Ozzies made the cut.

Legends Tour

Tournament: NI Legends

Dates: 4-6 September

Course: Galgorm Castle Golf Club

Purse:€??

Ozzies in the field: Mark Brown (NZ), Steve Alker (NZ), Peter Fowler

Steve Alker is a winning machine. The Kiwi started the final day with the lead but South African Hennie Otto carded a closing round 64 to set the clubhouse lead. Alker, as is common, fired off enough birdies to have a two shot lead coming down the final hole. The win caps off a remarkable month for Alker with three back to back victories following his two wins on the US Champions Tour.
